Exuviance Sheer Daily Protector Sunscreen SPF 50 Review

I have another beauty post for you today - Exuviance's Sheer Daily Protector Sunscreen. I was very excited to try the product since I have been wearing sunscreen religiously for 16 years now. Many have passed through my hands and I am always curious to experiment with new ones. Let's check it out after the break...

First I will give a little background about the reason I am such a stickler for sunscreen. My family has two basic complexion types - a darker one, around MAC foundation shade NC35-40 that tans easily, and a lighter one, varying between NW15 and NC15 that may tan, but is quite translucent. I have the NC15 type - quite warm but very pale. Every member of my family with the lighter skin tone over the age of 40 has had cancer. Every single one. All three main types of skin cancer are represented, including melanoma, the most deadly. I already have, at age 37, some precancerous spots, and I never go out in the sun without high protection factor sunscreen plus a hat, year round, rain or shine. Sunscreen is not just critical to us with fair skin, but even deeper skin tones can get burns and skin cancer. If I see you out in the sun, chances are I will approach to offer you some sunscreen since it is always in my purse year round, haha!

That said, I have tried both chemical and physical sunscreen. Chemical sunscreens may break down in the sun and also sometimes provide less UVA protection. Physical sunscreens do not break down and provide equal UVA and UVB protection. For that reason, I have preferred physical sunscreens recently. The product I am showing you today, Exuviance Sheer Daily Protector, contains only physical sunscreens, in this case Titanium Dioxide 7% and Zinc Oxide 6%. This is a nice high percentage of active ingredient, so even if it is not applied correctly (ie. in sufficient quantity), it will provide some significant protection.

As you can see, this is a product provides anti-aging treatment as well as sun protection. What other ingredients are included?

Active ingredients: Titanium Dioxide 7.0%, Zinc Oxide 6.0%. Inactive ingredients: Aqua (Water), Dimethicone, Isododecane, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Hydrogenated Polydecene, Butyloctyl Salicylate, Gluconolactone, Styrene/Acrylates Copolymer, Alumina, Ammonium Hydroxide, Lactobionic Acid, PEG-9 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Phenethyl Benzoate, Nylon-12, Tocopheryl (Vitamin E) Acetate, Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG), Polyhydroxystearic Acid, thylhexylglycerin, Isohexadecane, Tocopherol, Dimethicone/PEG-10/15 Crosspolymer, Dipropylene Glycol, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Magnesium Sulfate, Methicone, Propylene Carbonate, Sodium Citrate, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Sodium Bisulfite, Phenoxyethanol, CI 77491 (Iron Oxide Red), CI 77492 (Iron Oxide Yellow), CI 77499 (Iron Oxide Black).

In addition to the active sunscreen ingredients, it has treatment ingredients Vitamin E and Lactobionic Acid. I noticed some silicone-based ingredients, such as dimethicone and isododecane, which made me a little leery as I sometimes break out from them. However, in over a week of testing, I did not experience any breakouts or more clogged pores than usual, so the product did not affect me aversely in that period.

The product comes in an outside box with information and a slender, hard plastic bottle that is 1.7 fl. oz., which is great as it is small enough to meet TSA carry on requirements.

One surprise I got when I first tried some out is that it is tinted! There is a reason for that! Sunscreens, particularly physical ones, tend to leave a white haze on the skin. This is most noticeable on darker skin tones. But remember what I said? Everyone needs to wear sunscreen to protect themselves! The tint for this one is enough to counteract the whitening effect, but not enough to look odd, or tinted, on the skin. This is perfect, since if it allows medium and deeper-toned ladies to wear a reliable physical sunscreen without bad cosmetic appearance, it will make the product useful to more people. Though the tint was darker than my fair skin, when rubbed in it was unnoticeable, and the shade it comes in is perfectly neutral.

So, how about the texture? This does feel a bit noticeable on the skin when first applied, but it quickly absorbs and does not leave a shiny residue. The sensation of it being on the skin decreases with time (some of the ingredients, such as isododecane, evaporate gradually). I consider it moisturizing, but once absorbed doesn't feel more greasy than other sunscreens I have used. Also, it did not affect makeup that was applied over it.

Exuviance Sheer Daily Protector is priced at $42 for 1.7 fl. oz. This is pricey, but for a facial sunscreen with good cosmetic properties, I think it is worth it. Certainly it is no more than a quality foundation makeup. I would reserve this for my face, as I do with all my physical sunscreens, since they tend to be more expensive and facial skin is more sensitive to chemical sunscreens.

Overall, I would say this is worth a try if you are looking for a high-protection physical sunscreen for facial use that is suitable for use with or without makeup.
