It's getting to that time of year when my skin could use a pick-me-up. It's about 10 degrees outside and the wind is howling - let's just say harsh skin conditions ahead!
I'm always up for trying new things, and love nothing more than wandering through the aisles of Target when I have the chance to find new and interesting beauty treats. It is always a fun adventure since I live in a rural area and Target provides both affordable and up to the minute beauty products on my trips into the city. Let's have a look some great new cremes and treatments from derma e that you can find on your next trip to the red bullseye! #NOTICETHELOTUS at Target in 2016... derma e has arrived!
Most of the time I have been guilty of just using whatever is on hand when it comes to skincare. While I am really serious about sunscreen use, cremes have generally not been a priority until recently. In my mid-30s I went from having oily, break-out prone skin to severe dryness and more apparent fine lines. My skin is pretty good for 37, and I still get mistaken for ten years younger, I know I've got to take better care of it if I want to keep it in good shape, particularly the delicate skin around my eyes.
Here are my main issues: 1) fine lines around my lower eyelid, between my brows, and smile lines that no longer go away when I am not smiling; 2) dryness and peeling; 3) discoloration and dark spots.
Fortunately the skin around my eyes tends not to be dry, but it definitely loses elasticity, particularly when I am tired. I was happy to test the derma e Firming DMAE Eye Lift to see how it would do as an eye creme and also a general face product.
derma e is a family-owned natural skin care company founded in California in 1984. Their line is vegan and cruelty free. They make a point of excluding some sensitizing and harmful ingredients that are avoided by natural skin care aficionados, such as parabens, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfate, petrolatum, mineral oil, artificial colors, and GMOs.
Let's have a look at some of the product information provided by derma e about this product:
Visibly lift, firm and tighten the delicate eye area while smoothing crow’s feet with this doctor-developed, multi-action eye treatment crème that contains advanced, clinically proven natural ingredients. DMAE, a widely-acclaimed skin-firming nutrient, is clinically proven to boost collagen for firmer, more resilient skin. InstaLift® Goji Berry glycopeptides add further firming, lifting and tightening antioxidant power. Advanced peptides Argireline® and Matrixyl® synthe'6® work together to soften facial muscles and synthesize new key components such as collagen, helping smooth wrinkles and discourage new lines from forming. Hyaluronic Acid, also known as nature's moisture magnet, infuses a surge of cooling eye moisture helping leave skin soft, smooth, tone and rehydrated. With continued use, this pro-collagen and pro-elastin blend leaves the delicate eye area firmer, smoother and younger-looking. 100% vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free, sulfate-free, mineral oil-free, lanolin-free, gluten-free, GMO-free.
As you can see, it is a natural skin care product and is also gluten free and vegan. As usual, I also checked the ingredients, and was happy to see it was free of silicones that cause my skin to break out sometimes:
Purified Water (Aqua), Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Niacinamide (Vitamin B3), Coco-Caprylate, Stearyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Propanediol (Zemea®), Lycium Barbarum (Instalift® Goji) Fruit Extract, Glyceryl Stearate, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Extract, Diheptyl Succinate, Capryloyl Glycerin/Sebacic Acid Copolymer, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Dimethyl MEA (DMAE), Palmitoyl Tripeptide-38 (Matrixyl® synthe'6®), Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 (Argireline®), Sodium Hyaluronate (Hyaluronic Acid; Actimoist®Bio-1), Thioctic (Alpha-Lipoic) Acid, Panthenol (Provitamin B5), Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (Vitamin C, Stay-C® 50), Organic Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil* (.1%), Caffeine, Hydroxypropyl Cyclodextrin, Allantoin, Xanthan Gum, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin.
The derma e Firming DMAE Eye Lift comes in a half ounce squeeze tube that is easy to control for precise dispensing. The texture is thick but absorbs easily. It is also fragrance free, which is great for the sensitive eye area.
So what was my experience? I tried this creme for a week, both for eyes and for my whole face. For eyes, I noticed that it plumped up the skin around my crows feet so they were less noticeable and kept my skin from getting dry for many hours after application. When I put it on at night, my skin was well hydrated the next day. I had some 5 hour nights of sleep and did not see too much of a difference on those days from normal in terms of elasticity, but when I was not so sleep deprived that situation improved. I am prone to miliaria, or little white dots under the skin, when I use products around my eyes that are too rich and was glad that I did not see any new ones pop up during testing.
I was very eager to see how it did as a full face creme as well as an eye product. In particular, it is because I saw how well the tiny tube would be to pack in my carry on when traveling. I would definitely say that you could use it as a full face product. It is a bit heavier than a normal face creme, so it may not work as well for that purpose as a lighter creme or lotion for people with oily skin, but for those of us with dry skin, it will work great as an all-purpose product. It is priced at $24.95, and a little goes a very long way, making it a good value.
derma e also sent me several other products from their extensive line to try.
The derma e Firming DMAE Moisturizer is the companion product to the DMAE Eye Lift. It is slightly lighter in texture than the Eye Lift and has a very faint lavender scent, barely noticeable.
It's ingredients are as follows:

Finally, I received a larger sample of the derma e Hydrating Night Creme. This is a slightly heavier version of the Hydrating Day Creme. With my dry skin I could definitely get away with using it in the day as well! It has the same super-soft plumeria scent, which is lovely but never intrusive. The ingredients are:
Purified Water (Aqua), Glycerin, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Sodium Hyaluronate (Hyaluronic Acid; Actimoist® Bio-1), Ascorbyl Palmitate (C-Ester), Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A), Panthenol (Provitamin B5), Allantoin, Organic Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract* (.1%), Organic Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract* (.1%), Cetyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol, Dimethicone, Xanthan Gum, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer (Aristoflex®), Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Plumeria Blossom Fragrance
It is also priced at $29.50 for 2oz.
Overall, I was quite happy with the products I tried - after the end of a week of testing my skin is glowing, smooth, flake free, and there is not a single pimple or sign of irritation, which sometimes happens when I try new products. I was thrilled to find an affordable, high quality alternative to mainstream anti-aging products, which I frequently find loaded down with silicones that cause me breakouts. The fact that the derma e line is offered at Target means that it will be as simple as the next chore run to pick up some new, healthy beauty products. Talk about instant gratification, haha! The products are all quite concentrated and I needed very little for whole-face coverage. I would say my tube of derma e Firming DMAE Eye Lift could easily last me several months, providing a good value for $24.95, especially when I know it won't break me out due to how gentle it is.
